ANSC 641 - Animal Health and Disease Management Strategies When Offered: S
3 Credit(s) 3 Lecture Hour(s) Topics that are relevant to disease management strategies in agricultural animal production will be explored. These include a review of causes of diseases and the general signs of good and poor animal health; Overview of the body’s defense mechanisms, including the immune system; Disease prevention strategies comprising of antimicrobial growth promoters, alternatives to antibiotics, vaccination, food security, and biosecurity; Concept of antibiotic resistance and one health will also be explored along with the micro- and macro-environments that result in diseases; Common diseases of farm animals and associated management strategies will be surveyed. Students will utilize knowledge acquired in class to prepare a research proposal to investigate the pathogenesis of a disease of their choice.
Prerequisite(s): ANSC 413 a “C” or better; Cannot be taken concurrently. Or with permission from instructor. Corequisite(s): ANSC 641 Laboratory Section.
