Political Science Minor

The Political Science minor is designed to give undergraduate students from different majors a well-rounded understanding of both historical and modern government systems and political activities. This program is ideal for students who want to build a strong foundation for advanced studies or pursue careers in fields like politics, policy, law, international relations, and education. With a structured curriculum, students will develop critical skills in written and oral communication, ethical reasoning, critical thinking, and intercultural and global awareness, as well as scholarly research with a focus on government, politics, and policy that will advance the Human Condition. 

To complete the minor, students must earn 15 credit hours with a grade of “C” or higher in each course. To be eligible, students need to have completed at least 24 credit hours in their major and have a GPA of at least 2.00. Students are allowed to declare up to two minors, and while the minor will be printed on their transcript, it will not appear on the diploma. A minimum of 12 credit hours must be at the 200-level or above and cannot overlap with the student’s primary degree plan. All courses required for the minor must be completed as outlined, with no substitutions allowed.

Students in the minor will take a mix of courses, including POLI 270: International Relations, POLI 311: Blacks & The American Political System, POLI 313: Women & Politics, POLI 365: Policy Analysis, and POLI 432: The Congress, each designed to provide diverse perspectives and deepen understanding of political science. This minor is meant to complement various majors and add valuable insights that can enhance students’ academic experiences and future career opportunities.

Political Science Minor


The minor in Political Science is designed to provide undergraduate students in other majors with the fundamentals of past or the governmental systems and political activity today necessary for advanced study in the discipline and/or employment in museums, law, mass media, politics, education, and related occupations. The minor in Political Science offers a structured program that allows students to acquire some level of skills in written and oral communication, ethical reasoning, critical thinking, intercultural and global awareness, and scholarly research with an emphasis in general history. The program requires 15 credit hours to be completed and passed with a grade of “C” or higher.  The student must complete at least 24 hours of academic credits in their own major before declaring a minor and must have a minimum GPA of 2.00. A student may not have more than the two minors regardless of the student’s major. The minor will be printed on the students’ transcript but not on the Diploma. A minor in this content area requires a minimum of twelve (12) credit hours not included in the baccalaureate degree plan of study at the 200-level or above. Students must complete all required courses, and no substitution of courses will be allowed.  This minor in Political Science aligns with specific program courses across multiple majors on campus. All undergraduate majors can benefit from the breadth of this field.
